Finding Hawaii's "perfect" island

After a year long stint working as a travel specialist, I still avoid the following question: Which island would you recommend in Hawaii? My mind goes blank when I hear that question. I’d rather talk about plane ticket and hotel rates. So why can’t I answer the simple question? Can't give you an answer now because my mind is still blank.

Hawaii is a top tourist destination in the U.S. with over 10 million visitors per year. Although there has been quite a drop in the number of guests in the past year, it still is a favorite getaway for families, friends and lovers. Who wouldn’t want to miss the warm, tranquil waters and the breath taking sceneries in Hawaii? Truly, there is no place on earth like the Aloha State.

And since summer is coming up, you might want to discover or rediscover the beauty of this famous group of islands.

Hawaii is generally composed of hundreds of islands spread over 1500 miles of the Hawaiian Volcanic Chain. At the southeastern part of the archipelago is where the “main islands” are located: the Big Island, Maui, Lanai, Molokai, Oahu and Kauai. Each island has its own hidden beauty and characteristic that makes it really difficult to choose where to spend your vacation. But let’s put it this way. If visiting all the islands is not possible due to time and budget limitations, just pick the island that suits your vacation best.

Hawaii’s Big Island

It’s called the Big Island because it is bigger than all the islands in Hawaii. This island is famous for its volcanoes and the annual Ironman Triathlon. It holds 11 out of 13 of the world’s climatic zones. So everything can be found here: snowcapped mountains, botanical gardens, rainforests and waterfalls. The island’s main attraction? Viewing Kilauea at night.

Oahu

Oahu is home to the world famous Waikiki Beach. It is also home of the state capitol and most of Hawaii’s population. This is where pro-surfers meet to catch “the wave” of their life as well as those who wanted to get in touch with the past horrors of Pearl Harbor. Local experts recommend visiting Diamond Head Crater for a dramatic view of the Waikiki Beach. And for shopaholics, don’t forget to check out Ala Moana, the world’s largest outdoor shopping center.

Maui

This is the second largest island in the archipelago and home to the Humpback whales. Maui's wide variety of landscapes have resulted from a unique combination of geology, topography and climate. Locals also suggest Waking up early to catch the sunrise atop Haleakala Crater. Maui is a mix of advanced café civilization, luxe resort life, and soul surfer mecca, all situated around singular natural sights.

Lanai

Lanai is also called the Pineapple Island because of its past as an island-wide pineapple plantation. So if you are planning to go on a romantic getaway, Lanai is the perfect island to go to. Discover two luxurious resorts, two championship golf-courses, and outdoor adventures unique to Lanai’s distinctive landscapes.

Kauai

This is the oldest of the main islands and the fourth largest. Kauai's spectacular scenery, refined and softened over the six million years of its volcano-birthed existence, is the big draw. You can explore the golden sand beaches of the Coconut Coast. Take a boat ride to marvel at the towering cliffs of the Napali Coast. Or See the massive Waimea Canyon, "The Grand Canyon of the Pacific."

Molokai

Molokai is known as the long time residence of Father Damien de Veuster, the Belgian priest who cared for patients with leprosy. But aside from that this island stays loyal to its Hawaiian traditions. So if you want to experience personalized activities, this is the island to visit. Take a memorable mule ride through Kalaupapa National Historical Park and learn about the selfless acts of Father Damien. Or Boat out to see the world’s tallest sea cliffs along the North Shore.

I loved Hawaii but I've never been there.

The beaches in Hawaii are known all throughout the world.

Would love to go there at least before I die. LOL1
