11 Facts You Already Know About Thanksgiving (But Others Don't)

1.    President George Washington proclaimed a one-time national day of thanks for Nov. 26, 1789, the first proclamation ever issued by a president.

2.    Lincoln declared the final Thursday in November to be a national day of thanksgiving, more than 200 years after the pilgrims arrived. In 1941, Congress finally made it an official holiday.

3.    20% of all turkeys consumed in the US each year are eaten on Thanksgiving

4.    Neil Armstrong was the first astronaut to eat a turkey dinner on the moon.

5.    The first Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade took place in 1924.

6.    The first football game broadcasted on Thanksgiving in 1934 was between Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears.

7.    Pilgrims didn't use forks instead they ate with spoons, knives, and fingers.

8.    Our traditional view of Thanksgiving dates from the 1621 Harvest Festival in Plymouth, Mass., a three-day feast the pilgrims held in conjunction with Native Americans to give thanks for surviving the winter of 1620 and for the bountiful harvest of 1621, made possible in large measure to the Indians who taught the pilgrims numerous food gathering and hunting techniques.

9.    One of the most recognizable symbols of Thanksgiving is the cornucopia, also called horn of plenty. It is a decorative motif, originating in ancient Greece, that symbolizes abundance.

10.    In 1989, President George H. W. Bush officially pardoned a turkey given to him during his first Thanksgiving in the White House.

11.    Massasoit was the name of the Indian chief that helped the pilgrims survive the winter of 1620.
